How to Improve Your Wi-Fi Signal

Most Wi-Fi problems come down to placement and interference, not your internet plan. Try the free fixes first, then consider hardware if you still have dead spots.

Free fixes to try first

  1. Move the router to a central, open spot, up high and away from walls.
  2. Keep it clear of microwaves, cordless phones, and thick metal or concrete.
  3. Connect to the 5 GHz band when you're nearby, since it's faster at short range.
  4. Restart the router so it picks a less crowded channel.
  5. Update the router's firmware from its settings page.

Upgrades worth paying for

  • A mesh Wi-Fi system, which uses several units to blanket a larger home.
  • A modern Wi-Fi 6 router if yours is several years old.
  • A wired Ethernet run to the rooms that need rock-solid speed.

Frequently asked questions

Do Wi-Fi extenders work?

They can fill a dead spot, but they often halve the speed at the extender. A mesh system usually gives a better, more seamless result for whole-home coverage.

Is 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz better?

5 GHz is faster but doesn't reach as far. 2.4 GHz is slower but travels further and through more walls. Use 5 GHz near the router and 2.4 GHz for distant rooms.
